What is an Ecology Block?
Basically, ecology blocks are large blocks that are not easily moved. These types of blocks are heavy large concrete blocks used for a variety of purposes. Another feature of these types of blocks is that they interlock together. They also are typically made from recycled concrete, which means that they are cheaper and more environmentally friendly. These blocks are typically 2 x 2 x 6 feet in size and weigh two thousand to four thousand pounds. They are massive! Another feature of the blocks is that they typically have a rebar loop on one side of them so that it is easier to maneuver them with a chain. This makes the actual project go a lot easier and smoother.
Uses
You can use ecology blocks in a number of different ways. These giant concrete blocks can be used for making retaining walls, erosion control walls, large outdoor storage bins, dividing walls, and protective barriers for utilities or propane and fuel tanks. These blocks are so inexpensive that it makes sense to use them in your project. You will not be disappointed when you choose ecology blocks for your project, and we know you will not be disappointed when you use our services! Interlocking Features
One of the unique features of these types of ecology blocks is that they interlock. They are usually not just a flat rectangular block; they can interconnect with one another to form stronger structures. The interlocking feature can vary depending on the designer. Sometimes it is a lego-like interlocking feature with two cement cylinders on top and negative cylinders on the bottom. They work exactly in the way that legos work, just a giant version of that. It is basically a giant, few thousand pound lego made of concrete.
There are other interlocking designs that are popular as well, such as the “V” shape, where one side of the bin block has a protruding “V” shape, and the bottom and opposite side of the block has a negative “V” shape. Additionally, there are other interlocking designs depending on the manufacturer. Make sure that all the blocks you are using for your project have the same matching interlocking feature in order to work together.
Sometimes, bin blocks are completely flat, which can also best accommodate certain projects. Whatever the design, bin blocks are the go-to when it comes to projects such as building retainer walls, being used as traffic or parking lot barriers, etc.
Surface
One cool design feature is that you can get certain finishes on the blocks. This is especially nice if you are designing a retaining wall or larger structure; it is more visually appealing. The finishes could be any one of the following- slate finish, river rock, brick, board-formed, sandblasted, or stucco design. These types of surface finishes could make your project look even better! Some people prefer this, but keep in mind that there is an upcharge per block when you do this type of service. When you calculate the total cost, it can be a bit more expensive.
However, most people prefer the unfinished bin blocks because they are the cheapest options on the market. This is especially helpful if you have a large project and need to use a lot of blocks; it can get expensive pretty quickly. Keep in mind that sometimes the surface appearance is irregular because the concrete is recycled. Some blocks may be darker or lighter, or even a mixture within the same block. The surface may be rough or even an irregular texture. Some people may not prefer this because it does not look uniform, but it does not affect the structure at all. The good news is that if you wanted, you could always paint over the blocks to make it all look the same. This could enhance your project and give it a finished look.
Common Names
Don’t be confused if you hear people calling ecology blocks something different! They have various names depending on the background and the area of the United States. You may hear them being called mafia blocks, barrier blocks, or large concrete blocks. There are so many other names that you may hear in the industry- interlocking concrete blocks, interlocking V-wedge blocks, concrete lego blocks, and large retaining wall blocks. Other names for these types of blocks include jumbo blocks, storage blocks, 2’ x 2’ x 6’ blocks, precast concrete blocks, gravity wall blocks, or waste blocks. There are so many names describing the same thing, so make sure you don’t get confused with all the different terms!
Environmental Benefits
Ecology blocks are named that because they are good for the environment. When creating these types of blocks, they use recycled concrete. This is a huge win, and it saves tremendously. Because of this, you do not need to create new concrete for the project, which is a savings. Additionally, you reuse recycled concrete that would have been otherwise discarded, which is saving on the other end as well. This is the main reason why these types of blocks are so cheap, because they use recycled materials. You will save considerable money when you choose these blocks over other types in the market.
